A local man received recognition of his exemplary service in his graduation from basic training at the Navy's Recruit Training Command last week.
Seaman Recruit Paul Pendleton of Martinez was awarded the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) Leadership Award as he graduated from the Great Lakes, Ill. boot camp on May 11.

The cultural heritage project dedicated to refurbishing the 22-foot, 1949 speedboat once owned by Martinez son Joe DiMaggio has served to spiritually nourish a handful of local craftsmen during a tough period of unemployment and economic hardship.

Students Of Exellence To Receive Recognition
Two Alhambra High School and two College Park High School students will be recognized, along with 34 other Contra Costa and Alameda county seniors, this afternoon at the Contra Costa County Office of Education's (CCCOE) Students of Excellence Awards.
Held in Concord between 4 and 5 p.m., the award ceremony honors students for their achievements in Regional Occupational Program (ROP) classes.

Alhambra Highlands Discussed
"The clock is ticking," city council member Mark Ross reminded his colleagues and staff at last week's meeting. "April 1, 2014, will be here before you know it," he added.
The following day, city-approved grading permits kick into effect, allowing bulldozers to start work on what is known as the Alhambra Highlands property, according to city manager Phil Vince.

Pit Bull Bite Sends Toddler To Hospital
Less than two hours after a three-year-old Martinez girl was bitten by a reported family dog Friday morning, news outlets around the Bay Area were reporting another "mauling" by a pit bull.
That wasn't exactly what happened, said Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office spokesman Jimmy Lee and Lewis Broschard, public information officer for Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.
